Why: My Midwife

I think there are a lot of preconceived misconceptions out there about midwives and their style of medical care. In my experience, a midwife is like the mother mentor you’ve always wanted. Or more specifically, in my case, I’ve had that in other relationships and it’s had a huge impact on my life. I knew, I just knew, when I was younger that I’d only work with midwives and that I’d have home births. I had a beautiful relationship with the midwife who birthed my daughter Heidi. We both lived in a small town, much like Mayberry, and I walked to all my appointments. She had a lovely little cottage on her property where I even had my ultrasounds. She laid the foundation for me to understand how my body worked and why and how to confidently do birth. Due to insurance, I had to switch to a different midwifery practice that utilizes a Certified Nurse Midwife for home births, and that’s how I discovered Kelly at Blue Ridge Home Birth. I briefly explained my …

Moments: of Grace

Maybe you’re one of those people who prayed for us in the aftermath of losing Heidi. I remember being shocked that one of my college professors had learned of our tragedy; he wrote me a letter that said, “Don’t let this stop you from having children and loving children. You were meant to be a mom and I believe God will give you more children.” Truly, we had people from all over the world praying over our broken family- a church in Indonesia, believers of Christ in Italy, a church in France, friends in Norway, people I’d never met who knew someone who knew us… the list was long and the prayers were heartfelt. Last night my husband and I were putting this miracle child to bed, and we knelt together beside her to pray like we do every night. But it didn’t feel routine in that moment- it felt miraculous. There we were- holding hands as parents, talking with our two year old, helping her understand who God is, asking for God’s blessings over …

a Fair Story

This time last year we were reeling from Everley’s sudden birth, still grappling with Heidi’s sudden passing just seven months prior, knocking holes in our bedroom walls to make room for a bassinet, and grasping for breath in the midst of crises and change and chaos.  My body felt like it’d been hit by a Mack truck after the caesarean and  I was still being wheeled to the NICU two weeks postpartum.    So we decided to go to the Fair. “What?” Yes. It sounds dramatic because it was kind of dramatic.  But we were desperate to do something normal, to spend time just the two of us, to let our worries go, to relax and blend into a crowd. We’d had tickets to a country concert at the county fair. We got the green light from nurses and doctors who were overseeing Everley, and though some said I’d never make it up the grand stand because I was still too weak, I not only made it…. I climbed (hobbled actually) to the very top.  …

How to Defeat Deficiencies In Instructional Assurance

The Internal Revenue Service allows people to withhold expenditures related to using truck or a car for business functions. Most of the people choose to get, when you might elect to write off the particular costs of using a car for company. Nevertheless, you cant just imagine at your company miles. The government requires one to maintain records to demonstrate the miles you take are precise and were certainly for business reasons. IRS Requirements IRS laws for citizens who elect to deduct the conventional mileage rate demand a sign exhibiting "miles visited, business function and location." You do not incorporate this record with all the duty forms you publish at the end of the year, but you must keep it as proof if the government concerns your mileage reduction.

Gratitude: Moment by Moment

Holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas and Independence Day are my favorites. Any excuse to have a party, I always say. This is why I love Pinterest! Tons of  ideas for decorations and festive creations. Like that cover photo I snagged from my board Festive | Holiday : perfect little place setting for a farm house Thanksgiving dinner! But I didn’t even pull off small bits of holiday style this year. My hands are so full with my new bundle of joy and my brain is so sleep deprived that late night pinning does not transform into tomorrow’s crafty project. Alas, most of my holiday inspirations are unachievable this year and I will have to settle for instant mashed potatoes, one partially dead pumpkin on the front porch, and our plain old unfestive farm house. Don’t get me wrong. Even though I’m not capable of being Pioneer Woman this year, I am still enjoying this holiday season. Last year my husband and I barely survived the holiday season. Heidibird, our firstborn, passed away unexpectedly, so we didn’t want to …

Clay: Sculpted for Purpose

“I am the clay and He is the Potter” … While in high school, I took local college courses; I was mostly focused on completing the fundamental first year academics before transferring to a small Christian liberal arts college, but I took a couple art classes, because I have always loved art and my brain spins creativity constantly. For some strange reason that I don’t remember, I hesitated to sign up for a sculpture class, but my designer/builder brother practically begged me to take the class, knowing that it would broaden my horizons and teach me skills that I didn’t have; I finally agreed within a couple weeks of the fall semester – a decision which merited me a huge brother hug, some of my most treasured “in-my-head” creative moments, and many life-lessons about the world and myself …

Dreaming: RV Beaching

This wintery weather has outlived my cozy winter heart. The holidays have blown through with the chill, and the snow dumped after we watched White Christmas. It’s the 2nd day of March and we’re expecting 10 inches of snow tomorrow. I don’t feel so warm anymore; I’m just too cold now. That is to say, this is the time of year when I start dreaming of the beach… I LOVE summertime. I love everything about it: bright sun rays, sweltering highs, fierce thunderstorms, crickets roaring, shiny stars, gritty sand, casual volleyball, crashing waves, low tides, sea shells and sea creatures, raging fire pits, gooey marshmallows, colorful bikinis, flip flops…  Summertime, I am ready for you! In light of such love, I came up with a brilliant idea. When I’m a mom of a brood, every summer I’ll hitch up an RV, pack my dogs and littles, and drive till the map turns blue. My favorite summer camping spot has been Assateague Island… For the past four years I’ve visited with a clan of close friends. That island …

Life's Lessons: My Mother & Homeschooling

Every now and then I browse through my Facebook newsfeed and eventually I wonder why I wasted time reviewing people’s lives when, a few years ago, I would have gone on with my daily life not knowing of friends’ inconsequential outings or newest hobbies. However, this is the age of social media, and it can be worth a moderate investment considering the opportunities to learn and be informed by other peers and acquaintances. I mainly take interest in the links, articles, videos, and blogs shared via Facebook and find that many of those resources are the catalyst for other personal thought processes and exploration. For example, the title and subject of my post here is inspired by a former fellow Psych major’s link to a mommy-blogger’s post about homeschooling/unschooling. The Nesting Gypsy‘s philosophy of teaching her children at home, her supporting details and resources were cause for me to reflect on my own unconventional academic journey and it’s life lessons. My three older brothers are the smart ones so I say when I tell the …
